Lot Essay

A related Derbyshire slate slab inlaid with a mosaic of bluejohn and other marbles was sold by Viscount Falkland in these Rooms, 17 February 1991, lot 103. The frame's plinth-supported columns enriched with reeds and palm-leaves, as well as the acanthus-scrolled feet appear on a table designed for the Earl of Cornwallis in June 1825 by Gillows (the design is entered in the firm's Estimate Sketch Books, no. 3433, preserved in the Westminster City Library).
