Lot Essay

Among the furniture supplied by George Bullock to Matthew Robinson Boulton at Tew Park, Oxfordshire, in the late 1810s were eleven dressing-tables. The more expensive, of oak with holly mouldings, were of this model. Five were delivered at a cost of #11 each (although one, with a 'sliding looking glass' cost #14); three more, of 'wainscot', cost #5 5s each. One dressing table (of the #11 model) was either not delivered or returned as superfluous and the most expensive one seems to have been reduced in price to #11, after a complaint from Boulton.
Three of the dressing tables were sold in Christie's house sale, 27-29 May 1987, lots 290-292.
