Lot Essay

These chairs with fretted-ribbon splats terminating in boldly voluted scrolls, and 'Vitruvian-waved' seat-rails are designed in the George II Palladian 'antique' manner and they correspond to seat-furniture commissioned by John, 4th Duke of Bedford in the mid-1750s for the parlour and gallery at Woburn Abbey, Bedfordshire.
A set of eight chairs of this pattern, without the voluted scrolls on the splats, was advertised by Norman Adams in Connoisseur, March 1948
