Lot Essay

THE WRITING-TABLE IS DESIGNED IN THE REGENCY ANTIQUE STYLE AND INLAID IN THE FRENCH MANNER INVENTED BY THE CABINET-MAKER AND UPHOLSTERER GEORGE BULLOCK (D. 1818) FOLLOWING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF HIS GRECIAN ROOMS IN PICADILLY IN 1810. ITS TRESTLE ENDS WITH QUADRUPLE COLUMNAR SUPPORTS AND ARCHED HERM FEET CORRESPOND TO THOSE OF THE OAK SOFA TABLE RICHLY INLAID WITH HOLLY NAD WHITE MOULDINGS ETC. WHICH HE SUPPLIED TO MATTHEW ROBINSON BOULTON AT TEW PARK, OXFORDSHIRE IN 1817. IT WAS SUBSEQUENTLY SOLD FROM THERE IN CHRISTIE'S HOUSE SALE, 27 MAY 1987, LOT 34). ITS RUNNING BORDER OF FLOWERS AND FOLIAGE, WHICH FRAMES THE FINELY VEINED OAK TOP, FEATURES IN BULLOCK'S DESIGNS TRACED BY MR. WILKINSON AND PRESERVED IN THE CITY MUSEUM, BIRMINGHAM (SEE: C. WAINWRIGHT GEORGE BULLOCK, LONDON, 1988, FIG. 41). IN HIS REPOSITORY OF THE ARTS, 1816, RUDOLPH ACKERMANN PRAISED BULLOCK'S WORK FOR BEING 'DESIGNED FOR EXECUTION IN OUR NATIVE WOODS.. A STYLE HAPPILY INTRODUCED BOTH IN RESPECT OF TASTE AND TRUE PATRIOTISM'. THE SAME BORDER APPEARS ON AN OAK-VENEERED TABLE SUPPLIED FOR FRANCIS, 6TH DUKE OF BEDFORD'S HOUSE AT ENDSLEIGH, DEVON, AROUND 1815
