Lot Essay

Ertz, loc. cit. (who has not seen this picture in the original) correctly identifies it as being that sold at Sotheby's in 1966, but seems incorrect in stating that it is a variant of a picture by Brueghel in Vaduz (op. cit., p. 574, no. 105), as the latter has only a very loose compositional relationship to the present picture.
