Lot Essay

The composition of the present picture, dated by Waterhouse to circa 1755-7 is echoed in a drawing made two or three years later by the artist (see J. Hayes, The Drawings of Thomas Gainsborough, London and New Haven, 1970, II, no. 233 pl.70). The influence of the Dutch Landscape painters of the Seventeenth Century is seen in the motif of the White Horse, inspired by Wouwerman, and the peasant sleeping on the bank, inspired by Jan Wijnants
