Medley by Gimcrack was owned by Sir John Lade 2nd Bt. (1759-1838), friend of Prince George, later the Prince Regent and King George IV. Lade, a notorious figure in racing circles eventually became bankrupt due to his racing expenses. The present picture shows the four mile race held at Epsom on the same day, 24th May 1781, as the second Derby. Lade's Crop started in the Derby as favourite but finished second to Mr. O'Kelly's Young Eclipse. Golden Dun by Herod was owned by William, 3rd Earl of March and 4th Duke of Queensberry who had been a successful jockey in his own right. Fame by Pantaloon was owned by Edward, 13th Earl of Derby whose father had founded the race that was to be named in his honour in 1780.
