Lot Essay

A study of a garzone for the pose of the Beata Michelina painted for Alessandro Barignani in 1606 for San Francesco, Pesaro and now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, A. Emiliani, Federico Barocci, Bologna, 1985, II, illustrated p. 368. The connection with the painting is further strengthened by the inclusion of the Beata's hat which, in the altarpiece, appears in the right foreground. The schematic treatment of the features in a study in the Uffizi for the same painting are comparable to that of the present drawing, A. Emiliani, op. cit., fig. 816
