Lot Essay

Palla was played in Florence from the early 16th Century, and artists such as Callot (D. Ternois, Jacques Callot, Paris, 1962, nos. 857-65) and Poccetti made drawings of players, Sotheby's, 5 July 1993, lot 9, illustrated. The game still survives and is better known under its Spanish name of Pelota
