Lot Essay

Peter Fuhring suggested that this and the following two drawings are related to Act IV of Alessandro in Sidone - 'Giardino con fontane e con deliziosi ritiri di verdura' - performed at the Hofburg, Vienna on 6 February 1737. Antonio Galli Bibiena produced the scenery for the production. Preparatory studies corresponding to the left part of the present drawing and another of the fountain are in Bibiena's sketchbook in the Houghton Library
