Lot Essay

Possibly a preliminary idea for the the ceiling painted for Károly Esterházy, Bishop of Eger for the ceiling of the church in Pápa, Hungary, K. Garas, Franz Anton Maulbertsch, Graz, 1960, pp. 130-4, pl. 259. The general disposition of the figures is similar in the fresco, although the artist simplified the shape of the frame to an oval. The pose of the angel holding up the Virgin in the ceiling fresco in the Seminarkirche, Székesfehérvár (K. Garas, op. cit., pl. 190) recalls that of the present drawing
