Lot Essay

Although the function of the present fitting cannot be determined with certainty, it bears many similarities to horse harness pendants of the later middle ages. These pendants, which are commonly decorated with heraldic devices, were used to add to the pageantry of ceremonial occasions (See London, Royal Academy of Arts, Age of Chivalry, Art in Plantagenet England 1200-1400, 1987, p. 258).
