Lot Essay

Alexander I of Russia (1777-1825) was the grandson and favourite of Catherine the Great. His education was closely regulated by the latter, and his reign is usually viewed as a return to the 'enlightened despotism' of his grandmother's era, after his father's reign was brought to a premature end by an assassin. It was against Alexander that Napoleon launched his disastrous Russian campaign.
