The overall form of this bell, as well as several applied motifs, such as the garlands and the leaping cherubs, are identical to another signed bell by van den Eynde which was included in the exhibition on metalwork in Amsterdam in 1986 (loc.cit.). The artist, who appears to have spent all his working life as a bell and clockmaker in modern-day Belgium, was born in Malines in 1515, and died in Antwerp in 1556.
Another signed bell by van den Eynde was sold in the sale of An Important Collection of Metalwork, Sotheby's, Amsterdam, 20 Oct. 1986, lot 141.
