Lot Essay

The present candlesticks are after models by the bronze founder Gasparo, signed versions of which are in the Museo Poldi-Pezzoli, Milan. These originals, dated 1551 and with detachable drip pans not found on the present examples, are also closely connected to a pair of candlesticks in the Frick Collection, New York (Pope-Hennessy, loc.cit.).
