When the present picture was with Leonard Koetser, Dr. Grossman suggested that the figures signify 'In Time of War the Arts sleep'. In the catalogue of the 1974 sale it was suggested that they might represent Drawing with Painting asleep in his lap (see M. Winner, Die Quellen der Pictura-Allegorien in Gemälten Bildergalerien zu Antwerpen, Cologne thesis, 1957, pp. 41ff.)
