Lot Essay

A comparison of the present sitter with the young boy in Denner's group portrait of The Artist and his Family in the Riches sale, Sotheby's, 29 Nov. 1950, lot 140, indicates that the sitter may be the artist's son Jacob, who was also a painter. The sitter in the present picture also bears a strong resemblance to Denner's A young Man with a white Bonnet, in the Statens Museum for Kunst, Copenhagen
