watercolour on ivory paper, wearing a low cut dress and pearl necklace and earrings, the lady looks slightly to the right, her wavy black hair hanging down over her shoulders, (negligible staining), signed by Sadeq and dated 1191, gold and polychrome floral border within gold and coloured margins, on pink leaf painted with gold scrolling floral sprays, an inscription cartouche below, mounted, framed and glazed, portrait 6¾ x 4¾in. (17.3 x 12cm.); and ANOTHER SIMILAR depicting a lady wearing a veil over her hair, similar borders, mount and frame, portrait 5¾ x 3½in. (14.5 x 9cm.) (2)

Lot Essay

The inscription cartouche states that the Govenor of Khorassan and Sistan, the Mutawalli of the sacred shrine (at Mashhad) commissioned the illuminated borders from Ahmad Mozaheb Bashi in AH 1311/1893-4 AD.
