AFTERNOON SESSION AT 2.30 P.M. PRECISELY The Property of MR and MRS ERIC JOYALL THE HOHENEGGER COLLECTION OF ISLAMIC POTTERY The following 23 lots are from the collection of C.G.Hohenegger (1909-1987), formed while he was posted as a civil engineer to Iran (1935-39 and 1955-78). They very clearly show his fascination with and love of the monochromatic forms of Islamic decoration in this medium. Of greatest interest was the variety of decorative elements in this medium; the condition of the pieces was sometimes secondary. On his retirement, he formed two albums of drawings and notes on the pieces in the collection. He was well suited for this as he had been trained in the Fine Art Academy in Vienna. Not only is each piece superbly drawn, in a style very close to engraving, but all measurements are precisely taken while technical details and personal observations of each item are noted in the surrounding (German) text. Because of the superb quality of these, we are illustrating the lots from his notebooks, rather than the items themselves. The illustrations above show a representative group of the vessels in the collection. The entire collection was displayed in the Royal Ontario Museum, Canada, 1991-1993, together with a selection of the drawings.
