Traversi used the same model in three large canvases in the Basilica di San Paolo fuori le mura, Rome (see F. Bologna, Gaspare Traversi nell'illuminismo europea, Naples, 1980, pl. 24). The closest comparison can be made with the single figure works in the Pinacoteca d'Errico, Matera (Bologna, op. cit., pls. 10 and 11), but the present picture is even more realistic and neo-caravaggesque, and probably belongs to the artist's Roman period of the San Paolo pictures (1752).
