Further details
Sir John Jervis was in command of the Expeditionary Force which captured Martinique in 1794. He later went on to distinguish himself at the battle of Cape St. Vincent (1797), for which he was created Lord St. Vincent. This conflict was also to see the galantry of Capt. Horatio Nelson. The above letter deals with naval matters and in particular the number of Lieutenants who had distinguished themselves in battle under his command.
