1896 (13 Nov.) letter headed at Eshowe from H. Gardner, Treasurer and D. of S., Zululand, forwarding strikes in violet of "R.M. OFFICE/3/NOV/1896/HLABISA" and "INGWAVUMA/3/NOV/1896/ZULULAND", each on small piece and affixed to the letter, which includes, "I have received letters asking me if Rubber Postmarks are genuine. All our Postal Agencies use rubber stamps. I enclose specimens which please do not trouble to return. Collectors appear to be under the impression that rubber stamps are fiscal defacements. The old issues viz. English and Natal ½d., 1d. Fiscal, 6d., overprinted "Zululand", was never used for fiscal purposes".
