Lot Essay

Philippe Halsman was born in Latvia and emigrated to New York from Paris in 1940 with an emergency visa arranged by Albert Einstein. His photographs of Einstein, John Steinbeck and Adlai Stevenson have been used on American postage stamps. They have also appeared on more covers of Life magazine (one hundred and one issues in all) than those of any other photographer. His work is featured in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian Institution in the United States, the Royal Photographic Society in Britain and the Bibliothèque Nationale in Paris.
