Born in Munich, he has worked for magazines throughout Germany as well as working on documentary films. He has had a long association with Stern magazine since 1964 and became its New York correspondent and artistic director in Hamburg between 1986 and 1988. Among his awards was the Kulturpreis from the Deutsche Gesellschaft für die Photographie in 1968.
