Lot Essay
Eugene Richards served as a volunteer health advocate for VISTA in rural Arkansas during the 1960s and photgraphed in the area. He has also published a newspaper, Many Voices, and started Many Voices Press to publish his book Dorchester Days in 1978. At the request of his companion and collaborator, Dorthea Lynch who had cancer, he began to photographically document the course of her illness. In 1986 he shared the vice-presidency of Magnum with Susan Meiselas and Alex Webb. His most recent awards include the ICP Photographic Journalist Award for Below the Line in 1987.
