Major-General Elphinstone (1782-1842), third son of the Hon. William Fullerton-Elphinstone: entered the Army as ensign in the 41st Regiment; was promoted to Lieutenant 1804 and Captain in the 93rd Regiment. he exchanged inot the Grenadier Guards in 1807 and was promoted to Major into the 8th West India Regiment in 1811. In 1813 he purchased the Lieutenant-Coloncy of the 33rd Regiment and served under Sir Thomas Graham in Holland. He was awarded the Knight of the Order of William of Holland and of the of the Order of St. Anne of Russia and was made a C.B. due to his command at the Battle of Waterloo. In 1825 he was appointed to command the Benares division of the Bengal Army. In 1841 he took command of the British Army at Cabul and was known as "Elphy Bey" but due to his age and infirmity and the supposed peace at Cabul, was not prepared for the virtual seige of the British troops following the assassination of Sir William Macnaughton in 1841. Elphinstone was captured by the Afghans and died in captivity on 23 April 1842.
