A GEORGE II SILVER CUP AND COVER
maker's mark of Benjamin Godfrey, London, 1737

Of inverted bell form, and on spreading circular foot, cast and chased with shells and foliate scrolls, the body with two leaf-capped scroll handles and applied with a broad band of twisted flutes and foliage on a matted ground and below with a moulded rib, the domed cover similarly applied and with leaf-capped vase-shaped finial and bud terminal, the body and cover engraved twice with a coat-of-arms, marked under base, the cover unmarked - 12¾in. (32.5cm.) high

The arms are those of Vernatti impaling Tooke fo Constantine Vernatti of Seething Lane, London and his wife Mary Tooke. Their daughter Anna Margaretta (d.1765) married Francis Edwards of Welham and had a daughter who by Lord Anne Hamilton had a natural son, Gerard Anne Edwards. Lord Anne (1709-1748), third son of James, 4th Duke of Hamilton, was so called after his Godmother Queen Anne. Gerard Anne Edwards married Lady Jane Noel, sister of Henry 6th Earl of Gainsborough, and their son Gerard Noel Edwards assumed the name and arms of Noel by Royal licence, thus becoming Gerard Noel Noel and later Sir Gerard Noel Noel, 2nd Bt. after succeeding to his father-in-law's Baronetcy.
