Château Pétrus--Vintage 1961
Details
Château Pétrus--Vintage 1961
Pomerol, cru exceptionnel. Château-bottled
Excellent capsule. Branded cork. Label is stained, otherwise excellent appearance. Level into neck
Bottle states 2.5 litres (embossed), i.e. 3.3 bottles
Scarce in any format, it is exceptionally rare to find this remarkable wine in large format; the more so in an unusual marie-jeanne, a size of bottle much favoured in the 1950's and 1960's. The larger bottle size and the fact that it has self-evidently been carefully looked (in French private cellar) will have provided perfect maturation conditions for an already massive wine.
Tasting note: "Rich" in well over a dozen notes since 1967; "black as Egypt's night" even after eighteen years in bottle; magnificently opulent on nose and palate. From then on: appearance consistently deep and velvety, though now showing signs of maturity; a bouquet that defies description, "rich ripe mulberry Merlot" noted regularly, also, after time in the glass, scented, spicy, vegetal, wholemeal, and then a sort of tarry cinnamon. Very sweet, immensely full-bodied, firm yet fleshy, velvety with high extract masking tannin, lovely texture, slightly chocolaty, crammed with fruit.April 1990 ***** Magnificent, and with no end in sight (J. M. B. GVWB)
