A gentleman farmer and amateur photographer, de Banville accompanied the Egyptologist, Emanuel de Rougé on his journey to Egypt in 1863, where he worked for five months documenting the archaeology of the region. His work was widely praised at the time and led to his being awarded the Légion d'Honneur. Examples of his Egyptian photographs were included in the 1855 exhibition of the Société Française de Photographie.
