Lot Essay

The future Lord Kitchener was sent to the Near East in 1874 on behalf of the Palestine Exploration Fund and produced fifty photographs, of which a selection of twelve was published in 1875. Perez states, Kitchener's photographs might not be seen as a milestone in Near Eastern photography.....but they offer one of the best examples of the British attitude in the Holy Land and the frame of mind of the photographers who surveyed the area through the camera, with the Bible in mind.
