Russia, probably Moscow, circa 1684
Of traditional form, the outer rim with gilt inscription in borders and cartouches, the centre repoussé, chased and engraved with the Imperial double-headed eagle within ropework borders, the raised prow with gilt floral and foliate scrolls and acorn finial, the raised flat handle similarly engraved, appartently unmarked

Lot Essay

The inscription reads 'By Grace of God We Great Lord Tsars and Great Princes Ioann Alekseevich and Petr Alekseevich of all Great, Little and White Russia Autocrats in 1684 on 20th March presented this kovsh to the chief of the Nizhnii Novgorodsk Customs House for the year 1682 Anisim Liatin for services to the great increase to the treasury'.
