Lot Essay

Many sketches of Hugh Lane exist and it is likely that Orpen used these in preparation for the painting, 'Homage to Manet' (in the collection of the Manchester City Art Gallery) between 1906-9. Lane appears with George Moore, Philip Wilson Steer, D.S. MacColl, Walter Richard Sickert and Henry Tonks around a tea table and beneath the painting representing Eva Gonzales by Manet. The 'Eva Gonzales' was in the collection of Hugh Lane who drowned in the Lusitania in 1915
