probably Moscow, circa 1689
Of traditional form, the oval body engraved with a gilt inscription in Viaz script, the centre repoussé, chased and engraved with the Imperial double-headed eagle in a circle engraved with floral scrolls within decorative border, the raised prow with foliate scroll and acorn finial, the plain raised flat handle with similar foliate decoration, the base with later engraved Russian inscription 'A.Sh. No 86.', apparently unmarked

Lot Essay

The inscription reads 'By the Grace of God We Great Lord Tsars and Great Princes Ioann Alekseevich and Petr Alekseevich of all Great, Little and White Russia Autocrats in the year [1]689 presented this kovsh for the great increase to the exchequer by the Viatka-Kaviatka chief Luka Kuklin of the alcohol tax in 1688 compared with that for the year 1687'.
