marked with the Cyrillic initials of the unknown alderman M.Ts S and of the unknown workmaster A.G, Moscow, 1793
Of traditional form, the sides engraved with Russian inscriptions and portrait of Catherine the Great within laurel and floral bordered medallions, the domed centre repoussé, chased and engraved with a double-headed eagle within ribbon-tied laurel border, with pierced double-headed eagle finial, the flat handle chased and engraved with the crowned monogram of Catherine II within floral scroll border on a stippled ground, marked in base

Lot Essay

The inscription reads: By grace of God we Catherine the Second Empress and Autocrat of all the Russias etc. etc. etc. grant this kovsh to the Colonel of the Don Cossack Army Ivan Ivanovich Bolshoi for all his long and true service St. Petersburg 2nd of March 1793.
