Lot Essay

Ovid describes at length how the young prince Actæon, hunting in the forest, stumbled accidently upon the grotto where the goddess Diana and her companions were bathing. To punish him for his glimpse of divine nudity, Diana turned him into a stag. As a result, he was pursued and mutilated by his own hounds. In the present group, Actæon has already begun to grow horns as the hounds are about to attack.
