marked with the unrecorded maker's Cyrillic initials Ia.M, St. Petersburg, 1770
Of traditional form, the oval body engraved with a Russian inscription and portrait in six shell cartouches, the centre repoussé, chased and engraved with the Imperial double-headed eagle incorporating the arms of Russia within circular border, the raised prow with applied foliate and shell scrolls and double-headed eagle finial, the flat handle with applied foliate and shell decoration with a crowned oval engraved with the cypher of Catherine II, marked in base

Lot Essay

The inscription reads 'By the Grace of God We Catherine the Second Empress and Autocrat of All Russia etc. etc. grant this kovsh to the Ataman of the Don Cossack Army Stefan Danilovich Efremov for his many and faithful services St. Petersburg 3rd July 1765'.
