Lot Essay

It is possible that these tables, together with the suite of late 18th Century Florentine chairs (sold in these Rooms 9 June 1988, lot 101) and the painted cassone (illustrated M. Drury, 'Italian Furniture in National Trust Houses', Furniture History, 1984, pl. 57a), were acquired in Italy in 1876 by Lionel Sackville-West, 2nd Lord Sackville (d. 1908).

A closely related suite of Tuscan seat-furniture, carved with parcel-gilt diminishing husks is illustrated in G. Morazzoni, Il Mobile NeoClassico Italiano Milan 1955, Tav. CCVII
