This side table reflects the Neo-classical style as popularised by Giovanni Battista Piranesi (d.1778). Related ram's-heads to the corners with a foliate frieze centred by a portrait medallion appear on a design for a tavolo da muro by Piranesi circa 1765 and illustrated in A. Gouzales-Palacios 'Il Tempio del Gusto, Romas E Il Regno della Due Sicile', vol II, Milan 1984, fig 153

A Venetian side table with related foliate arabesque frieze centred by a portrait medallion between mythological beasts is illustrated in G. Morazzoni, 'Il Mobile Neoclassico Italiano', Milan 1955, pl.CCCXLIII
