Lot Essay

This tripartite glazed display-cabinet with satinwood veneered secretaire-drawer and herm feet has the elegant proportions of bookcases illustrated in A. Hepplewhite & Co's, Cabinet-Maker's and Upholsterer's Guide, 1788-94. As this 'commode' painted frieze is painted in a rare manner with trompe l'oeil marble plaquettes, it is possibly that the cabinet's marbeling took place in the early 19th Century to correspond with the marble inlay of the floral cabinet (lot 58)

This is probably either the 'Panelled book case with glazed book cupboards + Drawers under' or the 'mahog. cabinet and minerals', both of which were recorded in the Library in the 1840 Inventory
