Lot Essay

Richard Gillow subscribed to 'Chippendale's Gentleman and Cabinet-Maker Director, 1754, and in 1765 he informed a client, when sending bookcase sketches, that 'If any of Chippendale's designs be more aggreeable I have his book and can execute 'em'. The glazing bars of this bookcase feature in the Director pl. XVI, and also in Messrs Gillows Estimate Sketch Books, no. 25, for 1766. The flowered-and-fluted frieze of this bookcase also appears on one set of bed-posts at Mere (see lot 127). The hollow-cornered panels also feature on a Director bookcase pattern, engraved in 1759, pl. LXXXVII
