The account books for 18 December 1829 record that Peter Langford-Brooke (d. 1840) paid ¨69 for this Chess board of Sicilian Agate. Its bobbin-encrusted stand, enriched with the Langford-Brooke crest of a badger, was commissioned in the Old English or Elizabethan style for the Antiquarian Peter Langford-Brooke's New Hall at Mere in the 1830's
