Lot Essay

The half-tester bed with japanned cornice and turned foot-posts flanking a panelled footboard with 'hollow' corners, can be attributed to Messrs. Gillow (its turning corresponding to that of the tripod tables [lot 8]) and is likely to have been supplied to Peter Langford-Brooke (d. 1840) in the 1820's. Its transformation from a four poster bed is likely to have taken place in the early 20th century, as happened with some of the beds in neighbouring Tatton Park. It may be that listed in 'Mrs Brooke's Apartment' as 'Four post bedstead, chintz furniture' in the 1840 Inventory .
