Lot Essay

Messrs. Gillow's Estimate Sketch Book, no. 5106 for August 1836, features a pattern for this type of tray-fitted library cabinet as a 'Pedestal portfolio stand' and lists its manufacturing cost as ¨13.2.6. It proved a popular and practical piece of furniture, and amongst related examples was one provided for the library at Tatton Park (See Tatton Park Guide, 1987 p. 14).

A closely related folio-cabinet was sold anonymously at Phillips, London, 17 Octber 1989, lot 98

This is listed in the 1840 Inventory of the Library:-' mahogany folio stand and cabinet with rising top and plate glass'
