Lot Essay

Throughout his stay in Naples, from 20 November 1828 until his departure on 7 April 1831, Peter Langford Brooke made several references in the account book he kept to transactions with Giacinto Gigante. The first is in August 1830. The Langford Brookes had gone to Ischia for a month or so in mid May that year; there are various preparatory notes in the account book for the trip and 'expenses for servants, donkies and moving to Ischia' are recorded, as well as an extra draft of money taken up on his man of business in Naples, Falconet. On 21 August there is a payment 'Gigante views in Ischia 24' (probably ducats or Scudi as the payment seems to have been noted in the currency of whichever country he was in), and on 23, possibly more 'Mrs L.B.'s acct for 2 views 2 4 0'. They returned to Naples at the beginning of November. On 11 November there is another entry 'Gigante for two drawings of caselli 36 0 0'. The artist appears in the round up of the accounts at the end of the year at 36 and on 5 January the following year 'Mr Gigante for views in Ischia 9 6 0'. Langford Brooke also took drawing lessons from Gigante, as a payment for 7 2 0 is recorded on 5 April 1831 is made for this.
