Lot Essay

In 1951 Sutherland was commissioned by Basil Spence to design a tapestry to hang behind the main alter of the new Coventry Cathedral. He experimented with a number of treatments of the subject taken from the Book of Revelation: Christ in Glory in the Tetramorph, which had been decided beforehand by the bishop and provost. The second cartoon showed Christ with his arms outstretched. Sutherland, as did the Reconstruction Committee, preferred this version to the first. However the final tapestry is based on a further development of this design, it was finally woven by Pinton Frères at Felletin, near Aubusson in 1959-60 and was installed in 1962
