GREUTER, Mathias (ca. 1565-1638) [Etched panoramic view of the funeral procession of the Duchess of Paliano]. Rome: 1624.

A continuous strip of seven sheets, overall 19 x 238cm, with etched panorama by Greuter. (A few small marginal tears, one tear into image area repaired with adhesive tape, some creasing, left and right margins with late blank extensions.) Mounted on modern wood and leather-covered roller, in a modern paper-covered tube.

This rare panorama by Greuter shows the funeral procession of the Duchess of Paliano running from Genazzano to Paliano (about 5km). The procession of carriages, soldiers and clergy meanders over the landscape to meet up with, and be greeted by, a party of clergy from Paliano. The Colonna arms fly over Paliano, and the bier of the Duchess bears the arms of Colonna impaling those of her family.

Greuter was born in Strasbourg in 1564 where he learnt his craft; he continued his career in Lyon and Avignon and finally, around 1610, settled in Rome, where he produced the maps and globes for which he is better known.
