ROSSI, Giovanni Giacomo (publisher). Ager Puteolanus sive prospectus eiusdem insigniores. Rome: G. Rossi, 1652.

Oblong 2° (267x 403mm). Etched title and engraved address to the reader, 22 etched views on 11 leaves, large engraved map. 18th-century mottled calf with 19th-century red morocco spine, the spine gilt in six compartments with raised bands, the first with the coroneted monogram of the Earls of Essex, lettered in the second and third, the others with repeat tooling in gilt (extremities scuffed). Provenance: Algernon Capell, 2nd Earl of Essex (1670-1710, armorial bookplate dated 1701); by descent (binding cypher).

A VERY RARE series of views of Pozzuolo and Pausilypo. The only other copy to have appeared on the market recently (the Kissner Maurice Johnson copy, these rooms, 3 October 1990, lot 392), was bound in 4° format, necessitating the folding of the map. The map in this copy is unfolded.
