2 volumes in one, oblong 2° (240 x 345mm.) Text in French and English. Engraved dedication to Queen Charlotte, a general map of Italy and 72 engraved plates by J. Emes, W. Byrne and others after Smith. Contemporary German red straight-grained morocco gilt BOUND FOR ERNEST AUGUST I, KING OF HANNOVER, covers with wide decorative border of fillets and roll-tools, surrounding a centrally-placed gilt crowned 'EA' monogram, flat spine in five compartments, lettered in one, the others with repeat pattern, gilt turn-ins, green watered silk liners and endleaves, g.e., by Voll of Mannheim with his ticket on front free-endpaper (small hole in leather on upper cover). Provenance: Ernest, Duke of Cumberland, later ERNEST AUGUST I, King of Hannover (1771-1851, binding).

A VERY FINE COPY of a work based on drawings made by 'Warwick' Smith. John 'Warwick' Smith lived and worked in Italy from 1776-1781 under the patronage of the Earl of Warwick. He was a leading member of the Watercolour Society and was elected its president in 1814. Lowndes III, p.2425; Cremonini 78.
