The picture does not seem to have been exhibited on completion, but Professor Vern Swanson informs us that this is also true of paintings by Alma-Tadema that were in the collection of Sir Ernest Davies. Presumably this patron made a habit of buying pictures direct from artists before they were seen in public, and perhaps even refused to let them be exhibited.
