cover IJ, good to very large margins three sides, just touched or cut-into at left, applied to the reverse of an entire letter (used as a seal) and neatly tied, addressed to Lewes and showing "NORWICH" (7 May 1840) and London (8 May) datestamps on reverse, the address panel shows fine strike of the black "Hevingham/Penny Post" with manuscript "2" crossed through and "stamp over" adjacent. The letter is written by Anna Sewell, the authoress of "Black Beauty", and gives mention of the new postage arrangements "What dost thou think of the new stamps? We seem to think that the envelopes look rather unworthy of us as a nation, they are so finiky and such bad paper". Minor perimeter faults and short filing note on face but nevertheless a fine and most unusual item. Hand written transcript included. Photo
